The not-so-smart solutions to sustainability issues

This cartoon by Sustainability Illustrated made us laugh.

However, it’s a good way to illustrate the way we approach protecting the planet- it’s the same way we approach planning:

‘Not in My Back Yard’!

The NIMBY laws ruling our oceans will not protect us long term, and therefore we need to take a more sustainable approach.

Current laws are pretty ineffective to avoid pollution. The International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) adopted in 1973 stipulates that “In any case, no discharge of residues containing noxious substances is permitted within 12 miles of the nearest land.”
