Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS)

The Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme is a mandatory energy assessment scheme for organisations in the UK that meet the qualification criteria and must be completed every 4 years.

The qualification criteria for ESOS are -

- Over 250 members of staff

- A turnover of over £44.1m and an annual balance sheet of over £37.9m

(If you are a public body as per the Public Contract Regulations, you are not required to participate)

What goes into an ESOS assessment –

1. Calculate your total energy consumption (including buildings, industrial process and transport)

2. Identify your areas of significant energy consumption

3. Calculate your energy intensity ratios

4. Decide on your route(s) to compliance and appoint an ESOS lead assessor from MEES Solutions

5. Carry out any necessary ESOS energy audits

6. Complete the ESOS report and share with the corporate group

7. Submit compliance notification to the Environment Agency

8. Keep evidence pack

Important Dates

The deadline for submitting a compliance notification for the current (third) compliance period is 5 June 2024

Extension period (if registered by 5 June) is 6 August 2024

ESOS action plan must be signed off by a board level director (or equivalent) and submitted through the compliance notification system by the action plan deadline which is

5 December 2024

Annual progress updates also need submitting by:

5 December 2025

5 December 2026

Don’t forget!

If a qualifying organisation misses the deadline, they can expect to receive a basic fine of £50,000, plus an additional fine of £500 per day up to a maximum of 80 days.
